Supply has also picked up amid bumper demand for affordable electric cars in India, starting with the launch of its Tiago EV by Tata Motors. Now soon MG Motor India will also launch its entry-level electric car MG Air EV, which will be based on the Wuling Air EV sold in China. This car has been specially designed for heavy traffic and crowded roads. Recently this MG Air EV has been seen during testing. This EV will compete directly with the Tata Tiago EV. The first Tiago Electric will be priced between Rs 8.49 lakh and Rs 11.79 lakh (ex-showroom). MG has also said that its electric car will cost up to Rs 10 lakh.
MG Air EV Battery pack and Range
Globally, the MG Air EV is available with two battery packs: 17.3kWh and 26.7kWh. Both the battery packs are mated to a rear-wheel drivetrain with a 40PS electric motor. In this EV, you will get to see a single-speed automatic gearbox. According to media reports, the battery of Tata AutoComp can be seen in MG’s upcoming electric car. The smaller and larger battery packs have claimed a range of 200km and 300km respectively.
MG Air EV Interior
The interior layout looks similar to the popular Wuling Honghuang EV sold in China. The interiors of the upcoming small MG EV in India have a dual-tone set-up, with lighter colours being used liberally throughout the cabin. The highlight of the interior is the twin 10.25-inch screen, which gives vehicle details and other information. Two horizontally positioned AC vents are placed just below the screen, with three round knobs for HVAC controls.
A steering wheel is a two-spoke unit with a round boss and two separate control sets on each side. The door pads, dashboard and seats have been finished in white and grey. While the cabin is strictly for four people, it looks spacious – the rear seats are pushed back to free up more legroom
MG Air EV Exterior
The MG Air EV is quite a funky, boxy character. The nose consists of a full-width light bar connected via chrome strips that stream directly to the door-mounted wing mirrors. Below this light bar is the charging port door, which will have the MG logo on it. The squarish headlamps sit right above the Angular-styled front bumper, with slim fog lamps and a body-coloured panel at the bottom edge.
The doors of the Air EV are slightly longer than those of other GSEV cars, allowing easy entry into the second row. A vertically oriented large window sits behind the front door. The wheels are 12-inch steel rims with plastic hub caps. The rear styling is very clean with a curved windscreen and smaller tail-light units, which in a way mimic the style of the headlights. Below the windscreen is a neat horizontal light bar that extends right in front of the number plate housing set in the bumper.
MG Air EV Features
The MG Air EV will feature connected car tech, instrument cluster, auto AC, steering-mounted controls and a 10.25-inch digital floating display. Its safety kit will include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a rear parking camera.
Launch and Price
It can be launched in January 2023. The starting price of the four-seater compact EV is expected to be Rs.10 lakh (ex-showroom).
